The Power of Women in Yoga

By Janice Gates

Move over gentlemen, the ladies of power have arrived. And it’s about time. I love reading about women who have reclaimed their authority, personal power, and are realizing their inner force.

This is a book about the journeys of 17 women who have learned to celebrate themselves through the practice of Yoga. Janice Gates has done a wonderful job of gathering the ‘stories’ of women who went to the edge, & were not afraid to fly.

For those of you who are new to the art of Yoga, this book will whet your appetite to learn more of this ancient practice that has become so vital and ‘alive’ in modern times.

If Yoga is your mainstay, you will love reading the tales of like-minds, and it will invigorate your continuance in Yogic communities.

This book is peppered with some beautiful illustrations and portraits. The foreword by Linda Sparrowe truly sets the stage for the historical references regarding women in Yoga. I found I couldn’t wait to delve into the individual narratives.

My personal favorites (and you will be sure to chose your own, here..) were Sharon Gannon, cofounder of the Jivamuktri Yoga Method in New York. Her quote, “All the great teachers in history were radicals. When those last few moments come, we don’t want to regret that we didn’t take up those opportunities to speak and stand up. Theory is good, but it’s useless unless you can apply it.”  Here, here! A code to live by.

I also loved the story of Sonia Nelson,  director of the Vedic Chant Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Having attended a workshop in Santa Fe a few years back, where the power of Chant was introduced to me.. I can certainly attest to the connection to a higher force when we chant, individually as well as in group.
