Practicing Buddhism – Its Only For Older People

One of the most interesting aspects of seeing Buddhism as it is understood and practiced in Asian countries and cultures is that is thought of as being something that is only for older people.

This conceptualization of it and its practice is reinforced by the fact that we see older people as being the ones who spend their time visiting the various temples and learning and practicing meditation, so there may be some truth and accuracy in conceptualizing it this way.

Of course, Buddhism is something that can be learned by people of any and all ages. Whether one who is older is more intellectually able to or interested in learning and understanding it may be a debatable subject.

When something is perceived as being such a way in a country or culture or is something that is being habitually done, the idea that it is a reality of life and living and the understanding and practicing of Buddhism becomes deep seeded. Of course in the west, we see people who are quite young taking an interest in learning and practicing Buddhism then in the east.

Of course, it makes good sense for all people who want to get to a better point in their lives, regardless of their age, to make some effort to see what Buddhism is teaching them to do.

If one can understand and implement these teachings when they are young, they are more likely to live a life that is more fruitful and healthy.

This is because the set of teachings and disciplines that Buddhism teaches one brings fruitful benefits to those who learn them and those that they interact with.

We all gain when we are around or interact with someone who is friendly, compassionate, focused, balanced and mindful.

At the same time, the one who learns and practices Buddhism and specifically the major individual practice of it, meditation, will be an individual who can use their time and energy in a more fruitful and focused manner. This means that they will do better in their work and studies, while at the same time have more energy and focus with which to enjoy their free and leisure time with.

Buddhism was not founded and designed to be something for only older people but for all people to learn and grow from and with, regardless of their age and whether they are from the east or west.
