Best selling author John Izzo brings his readers to the end of the line. What really matters in this life? What is the key to living a life of happiness and purpose? In his new book, the five secrets you must discover before you die, Izzo interviews those whom many have labeled wise and inspirational. The interviewees are purposefully 60 years of age and older because the author felt there was something that shifted in awareness by that stage of life. That something is what this fantastic voyage is all about, getting into the hearts of those who have lived an exceptional existence on the planet and who are willing to share what they’ve learned. We are the beneficiaries of the hours of interviews and years of experience. After finishing the book, I see that we are indeed blessed.
Izzo states that he has always been intrigued by death and what it took to “live well and die happy”. His grandfather was a wise soul recognized by his family, yet passed away before he could present this wisdom to the author. It only makes sense that this project would germinate and become the force that it is and will be. Some things are simply meant to be. 235 lives are given a voice in this book, aren’t you glad you get to share in their collective wisdom?
As indicated by the title, Izzo breaks down the most common responses to general questions about life and dying by naming the top five. He then ponders how we can merge this new knowledge into our daily lives and the differences that ensue. He writes of the changes he experienced and how it is truly never too late; it is never too late to dream, to change, and to live. After reading these amazing secrets there are many quotes from those interviewed answering what the secret to life is in one sentence! I love that.
“It is my hope that each person who reads this book will experience the same grace and perspective that these wise people offered me. Stop judging the life you have lived and get on with the life you still may live.”

In a culture where the aged are lost and placed without thought, this book brings to us a look at who our elders are and what they have to say. It is a mouthpiece to the wisdom that has brewed for many years. The perspectives of a truly lived life are utterly precious and of unspeakable value. The five secrets you must discover before you die is a call and a gift to our society to begin the process of listening and learning. I know I have.
